1. When I open the program, a Windows screen is displayed but it is blank.

Check to see if the “Microsoft Word” box on the task bar at the bottom of your screen is flickering. Click on that to continue. A window will appear regarding macros. Click “enable macros” and then click on the “Exit Strategies” box on the bottom task bar. Each time you use this program you will be asked to enable the macros. See next question regarding macros on your computer if this does not work.

2. When I click on the buttons, they don’t work. How can I get them to work?

Be sure to Enable Macros in Word so the buttons will work properly. To enable macros, go to Tools, then Macro, then Security, select Medium and then OK. If your security is set to High or Very High, you’ll have to change it to Medium by clicking on the radio button to the left of Medium. Then click OK, close the document and reopen it. At the prompt asking if you want to Enable Macros, click "Enable".

3. I’m not comfortable with setting my security level at medium. Will this put my computer at risk for hackers?

Security Level only refers to the level of control Word has over macros in any Word document you open. It has NOTHING to do with the Security Level of your computer. That is handled by Windows or any Anti-Virus or Firewall software you have installed. If you forget to reset your Word Security Level when you are done editing Exit Strategies, the only way your computer can be damaged is if you were to open a Word document that has malicious macros in it. As with all attachments or downloads, if you don’t know or trust the source/sender, DO NOT OPEN IT.

4. When I try to open the Family Resource Guide, I get a message that asks me what program I want to use to open the file. What should I do?

This usually means that you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader loaded on your computer. To install this program, place the Exit Stage Right CD in your CD Rom drive. Click Start, then Run, then type “D:\Ar6\AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe” where “D” is the drive letter of your CD Rom drive. If “D” is not the drive letter of your CD Rom, you will have to substitute your CD Rom drive letter for “D”. Click Yes or OK to all the prompts that follow.

12. How can I listen to the audio instruction?

Simply double-click on the link to the instruction, then Windows will automatically open whatever program is the default for playing audio files. If a program is opening to play the files that you do not want use, you can go into the Windows Media Player, then click Tools, then click Options and click on the File Types tab. Make sure that the Windows audio file (wav) is checked. If it is not checked, check it and then Windows Media Player will now play all the audio instructions.

13. How do I exit from the audio instruction?

First, try using your mouse to scroll up or down to stop the audio. If another program opens when you double-click on an audio instruction (it will either display on top of Word or show on the task bar at the bottom of your screen) then you have two options. Either click on the X in the upper right corner of the Media Player, Winamp or whatever program it is, or on most programs you can click on File in the upper left, then click Close. If you plan on listening to other audio instructions, it will take fewer system resources if you just leave the program open and either press Alt and Tab keys at the same time or click on Exit Strategies on the Task Bar at the bottom of your screen audio instruction.

22. When I open Exit Strategies with Word 2007, it says it's "Read Only" and/or the macros don't work. What do I do?

If you copied the file directly from the CD, did you change its "Read-Only" attribute to false? You do that by finding the document in Windows Explorer, and then right-clicking on it. Then uncheck the "Read-Only" box.

When you open the document be sure to click the "Enable Macros" option when it pops up. If it does not pop up in Word 2007, you have to click on the “Office” button in the upper left corner (the group of blue, green yellow and red squares). Then click on Word Options at the bottom. Then click on Trust Center on the left. Then click on Trust Center Settings to the right. Then click on Macro Settings on the left, and then click Enable All Macros. Phew!
